Post-CalArts and Tumblr

I'm sorry blog. It's been waaayyy too long this time!
But 2014 has proven to be the most eventful year. Therefore, super busy!
Here's a small list of what happened this year:
- Sold my soul to my last film at CalArts
- My film made it into the 2014 Producer's Show (yay!)
- Graduated from CalArts (still can't believe it!)
- Moved up to the Bay Area
- Been getting a steady stream of freelance work

I also started a Tumblr that I post on more often just because it's a bit more convenient.
But I still feel like I owe to myself and this blog to put something on there.
Here is a link to my Tumblr for more of my work:

So without further ado, here is my last film at CalArts!
I can say, that I had so much fun with it and I can watch it without cringing. So, big step for me! Haha.

And here is a little painting that I did for the holidays.
I haven't used acrylic paint in a while and I remember how much fun it is.
So I sucked it up and it didn't turn out so bad!

I'll be traveling until the beginning of January, but I will do my best to put something on this blog once in a while.
I do miss it!
Happy Holidays and stay warm!

Double Crunch Time

Hello blog! It's been a while :P
I'm usually good about posting, even if it's a little bit.
But my fourth year at CalArts has been super busy.
I made a design portfolio this year and I've sold my soul to my film.
Check out my design portfolio! It's at the top tab that says "Design Portfolio."
With my help of my awesome character design teacher, Nate Wragg, I managed to put together a portfolio that I actually had fun doing.
And with Portfolio Day coming up, the crunching has doubled.
I'm hoping the next time I post won't be when my film is done. I'd like to update my blog with my film progress as I move on to cleaning and coloring my animation.
For now, here are a few backgrounds from my film!

End of the Semester

This semester's been going by so quick that I didn't even realize how long it's been since I posted!
I think it's the story of everyone's lives :P
I just wanted to post some concept art that I did for my film.
It's a table of food for zombies!

(It's a very long image so it will probably be best to view in a separate window!)

Product Designs

For this week's assignment, Nate Wragg wanted us to design a character advertising a product.
It was really fun, but I think I focused too much on the overall look instead of the character :/
I ended up doing 2 because I liked both ideas and I couldn't decide.
I had the sketches done early so I was able finish!
They're not quite character designs but thats ok :P

My Favorite Breakfast (as of now)

I just wanted to do a quick painting of my favorite breakfast.
It's rice with scrambled egg and Japanese furikake (rice seasoning).
Yum!

Zombies Galore!

Here are my film characters!
And they are all zombies. Because I love zombies and I've always wanted to do a film about them.
I dressed them up in fancy menswear from the 1920s because they are going to attend a tea party.
So I basically put all the things that I love together for my last film at CalArts.
Zombies, menswear and afternoon tea.
It's only my first pass, so I still have some revisions to do!
(their feet are all the same size... oops...)

I'm also thinking I should give them names at some point.
That could be fun.

The drawing above is for Nate Wragg's character design class.
His class is amazing and I'm learning a ton from him!

More zombies and zombie paraphernalia to come!

Breaking Bad!

I have forgotten about my blog for a while!
School has already started at full force, but it feels good to be back.
It's my last year at CalArts so I'm going to make it a good one!
I hope to start posting some film sketches and character designs soon.
But until then, I am mourning the end of one of my favorite shows.
So sad, and so happy.

Even More Watercolors

Here are some more watercolors that I did for people.
Summer has been so busy that it seems like this is all I do now :P

For my dad
(it's incomplete :P) :

For my supervisor at Titmouse who loves gummy worms:

Third Year Film Reboot

For my third year film this year, I decided that I want just sound effects and no music.
That may have been a mistake because it didn't work out so well :/
So I collaborated with the talented Michael Paul Kennedy and asked him to come up with something for my film.
I think my film does work better with the music and it's not so awkwardly silent anymore.
Which is good!
I have replaced my old film with the new version on Vimeo so hopefully other people can watch it with fresh eyes... and ears I suppose.

Also, a Sherdian intern that I work with was sad about the ending of my film.
So to show that there are no hard feelings, I did this quick little drawing:

We are all friends!
(sorry the scan is a but fuzzy..)

Boobies

This blog has been quiet for a while!
I haven't updated much because summer is my time to catch up on life and do things that I couldn't do during school.
But also, I've been doing a part time internship at Titmouse working on JJ Villard's show King Star King.
I am having such a great time working for him and I can't wait to see it air on Adult Swim next year!
I'm still drawing here and there. So maybe I can post those later.
For now, I only have a boobie animation that I did for Titmouse's Boobie Project.

Titmouse Boobies Project from Tammy Chang on Vimeo.

Yes, this is what I have to show after 2 months of summer vacation.
It's only supposed to be an 18 frame shot, but I looped it for more boobie-squeezing.

Batman!

This is a watercolor piece I recently did for my sister.
It's sort of a really late birthday card :P
But it was a lot of fun cause we're both big fans of Batman!

My Future Pets

Here is a painting that I did at work that took way too long for what it is :P

These are my future pets: a welsh corgi named Ham and an orange tabby named Cheese.
But any cat and dog would do too :)

Art Swap

I recently did an art swap with a fellow character animator and friend, Jacob Streilein.
I provided him with a tiny canvas and this is what he painted me:

It's from his third year film and it's so beautiful!
This is what I will be sending him when he's back from vacation:

The canvases are about 2 x 2.75". So they're very small. Mine was done with acrylic and I haven't touched acrylics since first year! I was really scared so I kept it simple.
I definitely want to buy more tiny canvases and do this over the summer because it turned out to be so much fun.
I forgot to add some yellow highlights on some of the rocks so I'll do that before I send it off to Jacob.
I hope he likes it, cause I'm not as skilled of a painter as he is :P

Update:

I finally added the yellow highlights!
I definitely think it looks a little better and not as flat.

Mother's Day Card

I painted this for my mom for Mother's Day.
My mom has been in Taiwan and she's coming back this Sunday so I can finally give it to her!

Business Card

My sound designer asked a couple of us to design a business card for him.
So this is what I came up with!

I changed the bear's fur for the business card because his chest fluff became too small.
So I just gave him a fur pattern.
It's nice to draw again!

Third Year Film!

It's that time of the year again!
Film time is finally over and summer vacation is just around the corner.
This year, I chose to do a CG film and I actually managed to finish it.
It was a tough beast to tackle but I learned so much in the process.
I really wanted to focus on animation this year, but I didn't quite get to do that because of modeling, rigging and just getting Maya to cooperate.
I almost handed it off to someone else to do it but in the end, I'm really glad that I did it myself.
With a ton of help of course :P

Many many thanks to my family, friends and CalArts staff who helped me during the process.
There's no way I could've done it without all of their help.

So here it is:

Print Fair and Films

It's been one crazy third year but I finally finished my film!
Also, another exciting thing that happened this weekend was the CalArts annual print fair.
I didn't even know it existed until a fellow graphic designer friend who was running the fair this year invited Kari, Melanie and I to attend.
It was so much fun and I'm super glad I got to be a part of it.
I just wanted to post a picture of our table and some of the prints that I was selling.

I drew myself in the picture because I was the one taking the picture.
I wish all three of us were in there.

Here are the prints that I was selling:

(this one might be upside down... )

The rest are original watercolor pieces that I was also selling:

And lastly, here is a still from my third year film this year:

I'll be posting my film after the Open Show this upcoming Saturday. I'm super excited to finally see everyone's film!

Alien Shrimp

No posts means it's film crunch time!
I just animate in Maya all day and it's a bit sad because I miss drawing.
But at least I was able to design this shrimp alien for Andy Suriano's class!
I looked up pictures of mantis shrimp because they are way cool.
And I got to ink my design this time.

Films due in 2 weeks!
Push on everyone!

Character Designs

For this post, I wanted to upload character designs that I did for Andy Suriano's class.
We were assigned to design a barbarian action show.
So I decided to design some Inuit barbarians!
Because I really like native american culture :)
These are taken straight from my portfolio. I want to make changes to them when I get the chance.
Especially the line work. But here they are for now!
There is one more character that is second in command to the bad guy.
I'll post him too sooner or later!
